Manuela Balducci’s Sustainable & Vegan Beauty Guide

In the cosmetic field the eco-sustainability issue is becoming more and more frequent and necessary. This is because both the components of cosmetics and their packaging have an environmental impact that is not yet exactly quantified but which far exceeds our hypotheses. It is a long and very complex process that sees the producers of raw materials engaged on several fronts. The theme of waste reduction, reuse of materials and recycling are the cornerstones of sustainability, and must develop with inevitable efforts in the cosmetic field as well.

Combining green products and performance to consumer satisfaction is an ambitious but possible challenge to be won, and many companies are working on it, achieving excellent results. The new rules that move the cosmetics market are based on respect for nature and biodiversity and respect for the consumer at the same time. Regarding these problems we recommend a series of products from leading companies in the world for eco-sustainable, vegan, cruelty free and gluten free production that will help you deal with the low temperatures that are now upon us, which can increase the risk of skin lesions!

When the temperature drops and we are about to face the Summer – Autumn change of season, our skin feels it, and not only because of the immediate discomfort of the frost on our face. The cold and dry climate typical of the colder seasons can damage our skin in a systematic way, removing hydration and thus facilitating cracking and splitting. This is why it is important to use the right products starting with skincare.

Butter cleansers are our allies, thanks to their consistency they allow us to perfectly remove impurities and makeup residues leaving the face hydrated. After rinsing our skin will not pull as it could happen with other cleansers. In this regard, we would like to point out Bioearth’s avocado-based make-up remover butter.

Bioearth – Avocado Cleansing Butter

Face cleanser and make up remover avocado butter, for gentle skin and deep cleansing action. The organic extract of chamomile flowers exerts a skin soothing action with moisturizing properties. The skin will appear cleansed, fresh and nourished. Packaging is 100% recycled.

On the other hand, for those who do not have dryness problems in winter, but on the contrary have very oily skin, I recommend the mauve-based make-up remover mousse from Biofficina Toscana. An anti-inflammatory cure-all that works for acne-prone skin as well.

Biofficina Toscana – Mallow Mousse

Biofficina Toscana mallow cleansing mousse is ideal for daily facial cleansing. It cleanses gently, removing both make-up residues and skin dirt. Its texture has a light and refreshing touch and leaves the skin smooth and velvety, while releasing a delicate floral scent.

Thanks to the blend of natural and delicate ingredients, the mousse is also ideal for sensitive skin. The following valuable active ingredients have been chosen by Biofficina Toscana for their targeted properties, which work in combination with vegetable surfactants, to create a soft mousse with delicate floral notes:

Organic mucilage of Tuscan mallow: rich in vitamins, carotene, tannins, flavonoids, polyphenolic acids, oleic acid, stearic acid and mineral salts, with moisturizing, emollient and refreshing properties. The presence of mucilage in an aqueous extract reduces the skin dehydration process, forming a colloidal film that protects it from external agents. The epidermis, stimulated by the active ingredients of this extract, is improved in its blood circulation and appears more uniform and smooth.

Organic passionflower extract: it has soothing, anti-reddening and protective properties of the microcirculation, it is rich in flavonoids and indole alkaloids, maltol and fatty acids.

Evolve Organic Beauty Radiant Glow Face Mask

This face mask is rich in organic ingredients, such as raw cocoa powder and clay which have a revitalizing and purifying effect. The blueberry particles contained exfoliate the skin making it silky and soft. Sweet almond oil is particularly nourishing and gives a really pleasant feeling of cleansed skin. The natural sugar extracts in contact with water make the mask creamy and milky, which consequently becomes easy to wash off, leaving the skin hydrated and clean. In addition, it has a sweet and pleasant scent thanks to organic vanilla oil.

The raw cocoa, rich in antioxidants, helps protect the skin and improve hydration. Plus, it contains large amounts of magnesium, vitamin C, and omega-6 fatty acids, all of which promote cell regeneration and give the skin a younger look. Sweet almond oil has a high content of vitamins A, E and B. It is quickly absorbed into the skin, without greasing it. The blueberry particles have a high nutrient content, they remove dead skin cells and ensure a radiant complexion.

How to use: apply a thick layer of mask on the skin. Leave on for 5 minutes, then rinse with warm water.

Note: Make sure to peel from the package with dry hands, so as not to let the water bacteria into the jar!

For hydration, on the contrary, Bjobj has two very good solutions for both dry and oily skin: cornflower-based dry skin face cream and the face cream for impure and oily skin.

When it comes to make-up

Vegan people not only use beauty products (skin care, make up, hair care) that are cruelty free, where there has been no violence against animals to make them, but they also do not use products whose ingredients are of animal origin. If this topic is important to many in general, for vegans using beauty products without animal based ingredients is a fundamental requirement.

This is how vegan certified eye shadows, blushes, foundations, powders and lipsticks have been conceived and spread for years. But there aren’t many of them, actually, because making products of this type is complicated. The main obstacle and the most common is the presence of beeswax in the formulas, especially in lipsticks.

Some of the ingredients that cosmetics should not contain in order to be able to identify them as vegan are the following: beeswax, propolis, cochineal, lanolin, silk protein (Peta organization has a complete list of Vegan certified brands, as well as Vegan Society).

One of the best make-up brands that we would recommend is Dear Dahlia, a Korean prestige vegan brand with multifunctional palettes. With a double cream-powder texture to create plays of light on the cheeks and eyes for a bonne mine and irresistibly feminine effect, as in the latest spring collection dedicated to the romantic shades of pink.

Among the discoveries Ash Cosmetics has 100% vegan make up particularly interesting for all its glitter eyeshadows, while for the dermatological approval for sensitive and atopic skin we have Huda Beauty. And then again among the others: Tarte, a brand also known for primers and glosses, KVD Vegan Beauty (latest product is a vegan mascara made with vegetable fats, blends of olive and sunflower oils, as well as black pigments) .

Dermablend is vegan, with its very well-known powder used by make-up artists, and vegan as well are the east Los Angeles brand Milani, Too Faced, Urban Decay (not 100% vegan yet but progressively), Lush (still with few references on make up), Axiology which is a brand specialized in lipsticks, Lime Crime (inventors of Velvetines, the first matt liquid lipstick), Every Day Minerals which has a 100% recyclable packaging as well, like Inika, Elf Cosmetics, Milk Makeup, Cover Fx and Charlotte Tilbury.

For celiac people, the gluten-free lipsticks of Red Apple Lipstick are highly recommended.
